Intel's AI chief Sachin Katti jumps ship to OpenAI, will help build human-like intelligence for ChatGPT

Intel’s top artificial intelligence executive, Sachin Katti, has left the chipmaker to join OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Katti will play a key role in developing the infrastructure that supports OpenAI’s efforts to create AI systems capable of thinking and learning more like humans. OpenAI President Greg Brockman announced Katti’s appointment on X (formerly Twitter), saying he will work on “designing and building our compute infrastructure,” which will power OpenAI’s artificial general intelligence (AGI) research. The company is currently one of the biggest consumers of high-end AI chips and has been looking to build more of its own hardware to meet growing computing needs. Intel confirmed Katti’s departure and said CEO Lip-Bu Tan will personally take charge of the company’s AI and advanced technology divisions. “AI remains one of Intel’s highest strategic priorities,” the company said, adding that it remains focused on executing its roadmap for emerging AI workloads. Katti’s move comes at a time when both Intel and OpenAI are in important phases of their journeys. For Intel, it’s another leadership change during its ongoing turnaround under Tan. For OpenAI, it signals a deeper push into the hardware side of artificial intelligence, an area that could change how future models like ChatGPT evolve.
